The short version

The Shelf is a personal film-cataloguing site run by one person as a hobby. It stores only what it needs to give you a login and keep your shelf. No ads, no tracking, and your data is never sold or shared for marketing.

Who runs it

The Shelf is run by Mogz, an individual based in the UK, who is the "controller" of your data under UK data protection law. Contact: hello@theshelf.fans.

What we store

• Account details: your email address, username and password. Passwords are stored as secure hashes (never readable, not even by us).
• Your shelf: the films you add and anything you record about them: ratings, rankings, moods, notes.
• Technical logs: basic sign-in and security logs (such as IP address and time) kept by our providers to prevent abuse.

Your shelf is private: only you can see it when you're signed in.

Why we use it

• To create your account, sign you in, and store your shelf, because that's the service you signed up for.
• To send essential emails only: confirming your account and resetting your password. No newsletters.
• To keep the site secure and stop bots and spam (our legitimate interest).

Services we rely on

• Supabase for the database and login system.
• Netlify for hosting the website.
• Resend to send account emails.
• Cloudflare for the "are you human?" check on sign-up and log-in, plus the domain name.
• TMDB for film details and posters. When you look up a film, your browser asks TMDB directly; we don't send them anything about you.

Some of these companies may process data outside the UK. When they do, they use the legal safeguards UK law requires.

Cookies & storage

We only use your browser's storage to keep you signed in. There are no advertising or analytics cookies.

How long we keep it

For as long as you have an account. Delete your account (Account → Delete my account) and your login, profile and every film on your shelf are erased straight away. Our providers' backups roll over within about 30 days.

Your rights

You can ask to see, correct, export or delete your data at any time. Most of it you can do yourself: use Export backup to download your shelf and Delete my account to erase everything. For anything else, email hello@theshelf.fans. If you're unhappy with how your data is handled, you can complain to the UK Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk.

Age

The Shelf isn't intended for children under 13.

Changes

If this policy changes in a way that matters, the date at the top will change, and for big changes we'll email you.
